Groundwork, 2020, Cement with paper, latex, wire and plaster, 73 cm x 31 cm x 31 cm
Groundwork is a narrative of development from vulnerable beginnings into a strong and becoming column of support. From the ground up, the layers between the concrete symbolize moments in my life that are squeezed and compressed by moments of trauma, which are represented by the heavy concrete layers. The paper stack references the work I did in Part Two with my journals. As the column grows, the wires are a reference to neuroplasticity: the brain's ability to grow and be reorganized by conscious effort. From this point, a solid foundation of support is established. Plastering, rubble, and handprints reinforce the presence of work and effort. The column is a reference to structural supports in construction, where concrete is strengthened and reinforced. The result is a heavy load-bearing column that can support an incredible weight above it, and one that can extend to great heights.
